According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour's Occupational Health & Safety
(OH&S) Act, all employees have the following rights in the workplace:
1. Right to Participate – the right to participate is exercised through employee participation with the Companies Joint Health and Safety Committee.
2. Right to Know – employees have the right to know about the hazards and chemicals in their workplace. The Workplace Hazardous Materials Management Information System (WHMIS) legislates that all chemicals have proper WHMIS labels, all Material Safety Data Sheets be available to the employee and that all employees receive WHMIS training.
3. Right to Refuse (Section 43 of OHSA).
4. Right to Stop Work (Section 45-48 of OSHA).
A worker may refuse to work or do particular work where he/she has reason to believe that:
a) Any equipment, machine, device or thing he or she is to use or operate is likely to endanger himself/herself or another person, or
b) The physical condition of the workplace is in contravention of the Act and is likely to endanger the employee or another worker.
Penalties associated with failure to comply with these mandatory requirements can easily cost many times more than the proper preperation.

Established by Industry Canada in 1983, the CAE since 1992 has been orchestrated by the National Quality Institute (NQI).
